While the definition of ‘youth’ do vary from country to country, for statistical purposes the UN defines ‘youth’, as those persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years, without prejudice to other definitions by Member States.

Youth in Pakistan:
Pakistan has a large population that can be categorized as falling within the UN’s definition of youth. An estimated 103 million Pakistanis, or 63% of the population, fall under the age of 25 years. However, as a result of endemic poverty, the majority of youth in Pakistan do not have the opportunity to experience a childhood. Youth literacy rate Youth Literacy Rate (age 15/24) is estimated to be 53%. Female youth literacy (age 15-24) conforming to the wider pattern in Pakistan, is even lower at 42.0%.*.
Child labor remains prevalent social issue in Pakistan. Economic conditions force many Pakistani youth to take up employment in their childhood years. Children's contribution to work in rural areas is about eight times greater than in urban areas. In Pakistan rural areas children work in the agricultural sector (74 per cent), whereas in urban areas, most working children (31 per cent) are engaged in the manufacturing sector. In both areas, the percentage of girls working in manufacturing and services is higher than that of boys.

Q.   What is the organizational structure of the PYHA?
A.    Executive Committee
       The Executive Committee is the main governing body of
       the Association, which formulates controls and regulates
       the policies of the Association. Its members are
       elected/drawn from the Senior Civil Servants,
       Educationists and renowned social workers. The committee
       is presently headed by Senator Wasim Sajjad, Leader of
       the House in Senate of Pakistan.
       YHA – Trust
      All the property and income of the Association west in
      charitable Trust, which consist of 8 trustees, out of which
      one person is the Managing Trustee to regulate the
      activities of the Trust.
       Local Management Committees:
      The Association is presently running 16 Youth Hostels, from
      which 6 Youth Hostels (Khanaspur, Bhurban, Naran, Sharan,
      Batakundi and Gilgit) are on mountains and seasonal. The
      remaining 8 hostels excluding Islamabad and Lahore are
      manned by semi illiterate Caretakers who control the
      operational activities of the Hostels. In order to augment
      the deficiency of educated staff, the hostels are managed
      by the Local Management Committees. These committees
      consist of retired Government Servants, renowned Social
      Workers and educationists. In most cases it is headed by
      the Vice Chancellor of a University.
      A double leaf bed-night register is kept in each hostel. The
      visitors holding the membership card make an entry of their
      stay in the register along with the amount paid and their
      signatures.
      The Caretaker toward the end of the month sends the
       leaves of register with the entries of stay and payments to
      the Headquarters.
      An imprest amount of Rs.1000/- is kept with the
      caretaker to meet the day-to-day expenditure.
      He sends the vouched accounts of the expenditure
      for reimbursement of the same.

      Pakistan Youth Hostels Association is an affiliate of
      International Youth Hostel Federation. Its headquarters
      are located at London . The IYHF coordinates the
      activities of the youth hostel associations of the world.
      An affiliation fee of $1000 is paid to the IYHF every
      year. IYHF prints a directory of the youth hostel
      associations of the world. The Federation indulged an
      ongoing research to modernize the various functions
      like minimum standards, free nights, training and
      computerization etc.

About International Youth Hostel Federation
The The International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) was founded in 1932. It is a federation of independent national youth hostel associations of the world. These national associations are given affiliation if they are non-political, non-profit making organizations and subscribe to the objects of the Federation as set out in the Article 2 of its Constitution. This affiliation then entitles them to issue International Membership Cards, which are accepted in hostels all over the world. The federation coordinates and guides the activities of the Youth Hostel Associations of the world. The IYHF holds a conference every second year to determine policies of the Federation. Its Headquarters are located in London, England.

Sights
Hina Lake, 10-Km east of Quetta is a good picnic spot. Two museums, Military’s Command and Staff College, Urch Valley, Hazerganji and Chilton National Park are the place to visit. Hill station Ziarat (2462 meters) 122-Km south east of Quetta. It was first developed as a summer resort by the British. It is extremely popular in summer from April to October.

A Chairlift operates at Ayubia. It gives a good view of the National Park. The visitors walk through the National Park to go to Dunga Gali, which is another holiday resort. There is a short cut of 6-Km to Nathia Gali, summer Headquarters of NWFP Government. Along the pipeline one can take a very interesting walk up to the hills of Nathioa Gali (2370 meters) and Kunala (2340 meters).


Northern Areas   
   
   Naran  

Naran is the capital of Kaghan Valley. Two branches of River Kunhar meet at Naran where the freshly melts snow water flows down, a breathlessly beautiful sights. There are many private hotels and restaurants with room prices ranging from Rs.500/- to Rs.3000/- a day.

The youth hostel building is located at a height of 1600 meters, 1.5-km short of Naran. The hostel is surrounded by tall pine trees. It gives an extremely beautiful look of the valley and winding river down below stays with the visitors all the time.
Lake Saif-ul-Maluk is an attractive sight during summer. The lake is a three hours walk from Naran. Jeeps are also available to reach at the lake only in 45 minutes. The local storytellers speak of princess and fairies and romance attached to the lake.

The river is full of trout fish. Fishing and trekking are the most popular activities in the area. During the summer vacation the hostel remains full. Prior booking from Islamabad is necessary to avoid inconvenience.

   Sharan  

The hostel is located 43-km from Balakot. After reaching Paras, the visitors are to cross River Kunhar. A jeep-able road goes right up to Sharan a distance of 15-km. Sharan is visible from behind a peak known as Musa Ka Musalla and hidden by pine trees, a very beautiful spot.
The area is not thickly populated. There is also a forest department Rest House. The Hostel building gives an ambitious look. Sharan has breath taking natural wild beauty. In addition to wildlife, there are a lot of singings. The famous forest of Darshi is located close at hand.

Sharan youth hostel is located at a place, which is particularly suitable for trekking. The hostellers explore the area by walking and trekking to new directions every day. The peaceful wild beauty of the place attracts the hostellers to stay for more days than normally plan. The services of a guide are provided to the youth during their stay in the hostel. Thick natural hard wood forests of Naddi and Daddar, pleasant walks, Suburb Mountains and lake views, cold-water trout fishing, high peaks and ideal for hiking.


   Batakundi  

Batakundi is another central location for trekking to various points beyond Naran. It suited for camping for the more adventures. The area is also surrounded by potatoes and peas fields.
Groups of Gypsies are seen going up in search of food for their sheep & goats. The road to Batakundi was jeep track but recently it is being replaced by a metalled road. The area is open for the tourists.

   Gilgit  

The town of Gilgit was established by the British in the year 1877 to extend their influence in the Northern Areas to counter the vulnerability of the area to Russian incursion.
The history of the Gilgit remained in oblivion as there is no written record.

Gilgit is the junction point of three greatest Mountain Ranges of the world, Karakuram, Hindukush and Himalayas. These three ranges are separated by two rivers, River Indus and River Gilgit joining with each other at this spot.

The importance of Gilgit has increased with the construction of Karakuram Highway, which connects it with the khunjarab Pass at the Chinese border. It is surrounded by snow covered peaks ranging from 1600 meters to 8000 metes. K-2 the world’s second highest peak is located in this area. Some of the world’s longest glaciers Siachin, Baltoro and Biafo are located in this area.

   Jamshoro - Hyderabad  
Its history goes back to a Hindu Ruler, who built a fort on the present site of the city. This fort was under occupation of Buddhists when a young Arab General, Muhammad Bin Qasim conquered it. It was a district of Arghun Empire which was ruling it in nearby Thatta.

It was named after its ruler Hyder Quli Arghuni. The Hostel at Jamshoro is located on Super Highway near the entry point of the University Campus. The city is accessible by rail and road. It is a newly constructed building with all accessories dinning, sitting, community baths, kitchen and lounge.
